(AP Photo\/Charlie Neibergall)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-next-post-navi\">\n<p>\nNext Post Coming Soon&#8230;\u25b6\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the news out of Oregon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wweek.com\/news\/courts\/2022\/11\/09\/backers-of-gun-control-measure-114-declare-victory-in-close-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">isn\u2019t good<\/a>, Iowa voters administered a firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/in-iowa-gun-safety-is-on-the-ballot-this-november\/\">slap to the face of gun control organizations<\/a> in Tuesday\u2019s election. By a 2 to 1 margin they voted to safeguard the right to keep and bear arms, designating it \u201ca fundamental individual right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawkeye State voters approved a proposed amendment to the Iowa State Constitution that not only reaffirms the federal Second Amendment, it also establishes that any gun control laws shall be viewed with strict scrutiny by Iowa courts.<\/p>\n<p>KCRG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/2022\/11\/09\/public-measure-1-putting-gun-protections-iowa-state-constitution-passes\/\">reports on the passage<\/a> of the measure. . .<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Voters in Iowa have chosen to amend the state\u2019s constitution to add extra gun rights protections, as well as putting tighter legal restrictions any efforts to pass a gun control law.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The language of the amendment that was approved by voters reads:<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Article I of the Constitution of the State of Iowa is amended by adding the following new section: Right to keep and bear arms. Sec. 1A. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>While the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution already provides gun rights to all Americans, many other states have adopted similar language to their constitutions. The new amendment to the Iowa Constitution adds the \u201cstrict scrutiny\u201d legal standard to judicial review of gun-related laws the state legislature may pass.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The measure marks the 49th Amendment to the Iowa State Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>And while Oregon\u2019s gun control bill narrowly passed, so much of it is so blatantly unconstitutional that the odds of successful challenges are very good.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">OREGON!
