Young, MD<\/p>\n<p>Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership member Mark Hamill, MD recently let us know about his team\u2019s newly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/follow-the-science-analysis-of-state-national-data-shows-more-civilian-gun-ownership-is-not-linked-to-increased-violent-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published paper<\/a> on how firearm sales across the states correlate with violent crime. (Short version \u2014 they don\u2019t.) Specifically, \u201cLegal Firearm Sales at State Level and Rates of Violent Crime, Property Crime, and Homicides\u201d will be published in the January 20023 edition of the <em>Journal of Surgical Research<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It should be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022480422005078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a>\u00a0through November.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hamill is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha specializing in critical care and trauma surgery. He\u2019s one of those physicians who puts victims of \u201cgun violence\u201d back together. Yet he\u2019s managed not to be infected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/this-is-how-biden-would-spend-your-tax-dollars-to-fight-the-gun-violence-public-health-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public health virus<\/a> and has been objectively looking at gun laws, the consequences of gunfire, and the realities of gun ownership including carrying firearms.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drgo.us\/concealed-carry-does-not-increase-violent-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0on his <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/journalacs\/Abstract\/2019\/01000\/State_Level_Firearm_Concealed_Carry_Legislation.1.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier study<\/a> \u201cState Level Firearm Concealed-Carry\u00a0Legislation and Rates of Homicide and Other Violent Crime\u201d that appeared in the January, 2019 <em>Journal of the American College of Surgery<\/em>. In that article, his team showed conclusively that relaxing concealed carry laws makes no significant difference in violent crime rates.<\/p>\n<p>Hamill and his co-authors do a similar service in their latest study showing that there is no \u201cassociation between increased lawful firearm sales and rates of crime or homicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are not casual conclusions or simple correlations based on artificially constructed controls, like so much agenda-driven work that tries to undercut the value of gun ownership. Hamill <em>et al<\/em> stay reality-based, using consistent, deep statistical analysis based purely on solid official statistics compiled state by state over decades.<\/p>\n<p>Their conclusion:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Robust analysis does not identify an association between increased lawful firearm sales and rates of crime or homicide. Based on this, it is unclear if efforts to limit lawful firearm sales would have any effect on rates of crime, homicide, or injuries from violence committed with firearms.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022480422005078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read the abstract<\/a> (and the paper, if you can access it via a subscription or institutional affiliation). This is the kind of work that is incontrovertible no matter what your politics may be. It underlines the fact that the thesis that restricting legal gun ownership and use would reduce crime, death, or injuries is null.<\/p>\n<p>There is actually reason to believe that individuals keeping and bearing arms, as protected by the Constitution, really reduces those tragedies. But all that is really necessary is to prove that doing so doesn\u2019t cause or increase them, which many studies like these, expert panels, and good surveys support.<\/p>\n<p>With no societal utility for infringement on the right to keep and bear arms, there\u2019s no case to be made for it.<\/p>\n<p>With good work like this, Dr. Hamill and his co-authors, of course, risk being tarred by the \u201cmainstream\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/physician-heal-thyself-jama-highlights-firearms-policies-that-dont-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/the-empire-strikes-back-the-trace-and-new-yorker-attack-john-lotts-methods-and-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> establishment as being beyond the pale. That\u2019s the same neighborhood where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/the-empire-strikes-back-the-trace-and-new-yorker-attack-john-lotts-methods-and-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. John Lott, Jr.<\/a> resides in their fevered imaginations.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a comfortable place to live, but the integrity and quality of their work makes such ostracism a badge of honor.
