(AP Photo\/Paul Sancya)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s been a long time coming, but the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/action.gunvote.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#GUNVOTE<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0could very well be the deciding factor in pushing Republican challenger Tudor Dixon past antigun Democratic incumbent Gov. Gretchen Wilmer.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Whitmer was among the earliest and most adamant governors in the country to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/gov-whitmer-proudly-wipes-out-wolverine-state-gun-stores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>proudly shut down<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0firearm retailers in 2020. This despite the fact that record numbers of law-abiding Michiganders have purchased firearms because they felt unsafe \u2013 more than 1.7 million according to NSSF-adjusted NICS verifications.<\/p>\n<p>In a gubernatorial debate, she doubled down on her decisions and now as crime is among voters\u2019 top concern as Election Day approaches, Gov. Whitmer.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Record Not to Repeat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the lead up to President Joe Biden\u2019s election, Gov. Whitmer tried desperately to land the spot as his Number 2. During his gun control\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gretchen-whitmers-veep-cred-i-kept-6600-firearms-industry-employees-out-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veepstakes<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with Moms Demand Action\u2019s Shannon Watts to make her case, she praised shutting down Michigan\u2019s gun stores, putting 6,600 Michiganders in the firearm and ammunition industry out of work by deeming them \u201cnon-essential\u201d during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would do it again. I absolutely stand by the decision that I made,\u201d Gov. Whitmer\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/gov-whitmer-proudly-wipes-out-wolverine-state-gun-stores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m not going to apologize. Gov. Whitmer still has no regrets. During the debate she made it known again. She reiterated her support for expanding restrictions on firearm sales to implement a universal background check, that isn\u2019t possible without violating federal law to institute a national firearm registry. She\u00a0 again pushed for mandatory gun storage laws in private homes that the Supreme Court in\u00a0<em>Heller<\/em>\u00a0said violates the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>NSSF and the entire firearm industry advocate for secure firearm storage through initiatives like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-president-and-ceo-joe-bartozzi-testifies-in-support-of-safe-firearm-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Project ChildSafe<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and manufacturers providing locking devices with each new firearm. These efforts have had a positive impact on reducing firearm tragedies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Gun Rights Champion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The contrast in the debate and the lead up to Nov. 8, couldn\u2019t be clearer. Dixon challenged the governor\u2019s flawed \u201cgun free\u201d zone push, saying \u201cGov. Gretchen Witmer or the pro-Second Amendment Tudor Dixon.
