(Ashlee Rezin Garcia\/Chicago Sun-Times via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-next-post-navi\">\n<p>\nNext Post Coming Soon&#8230;\u25b6\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Crime in Illinois could \u201cspiral out of control\u201d after a new law overhauling the state\u2019s criminal justice system goes into effect in January, the mayor of a Chicago suburb said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWhen I said that this is the most dangerous law I\u2019ve ever seen, I believe that,\u201d said Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau, who is running for Congress in Illinois\u2019 6th District.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The Illinois Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act changes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/illinois-end-cash-bail-release-alleged-criminals-onto-streets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple parts of Illinois\u2019 justice system<\/a> with provisions like ending cash bail; limiting how flights determine whether defendants are flight risks; and allows defendants under electronic monitoring to leave home for 48 hours before they can be charged with escape.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The legislation, which Gov. JB. Pritzker signed into law last year, will go into effect Jan. 1.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cI don\u2019t think we know what\u2019s coming from this,\u201d Pekau told Fox News. \u201cI think we can project that if criminals are allowed to run free and police officers can\u2019t protect citizens, citizens are going to start protecting themselves and take the law into their own hands.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The 764-page SAFE-T Act\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/illinois-safe-t-act-chicago-area-police-chief-prosecutor-sound-alarm-fast-tracked-public-safety-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed both chambers<\/a>\u00a0of Illinois\u2019 legislature in seven hours with no formal hearings or debates and without input from stakeholders, three former Illinois justice system officials wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2022\/10\/17\/23400610\/safe-t-act-legislature-criminal-justice-illinois-constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chicago Tribune op-ed<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014 Teny Sahakian in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/americas-most-dangerous-law-illinois-candidate-warns-anarchy-criminal-justice-overhaul\">America\u2019s \u2018most dangerous\u2019 law?
