(AP Photo\/Andrew Selsky)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-next-post-navi\">\n<p>\nNext Post Coming Soon&#8230;\u25b6\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>One of the nation\u2019s \u201cdefund the police\u201d and surging violent crime epicenters could see big changes on election day.<\/p>\n<p>Oregonians will soon cast their ballots and they are showing signs they may reject a severe gun control ballot initiative, as well as elect the first pro-Second Amendment governor in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_governors_of_Oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>more than forty years<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Backdrop<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The visuals were common and often on national news. Portland was a hotbed of violence, looting and riots in 2020 in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the rise of defund the police movement. Broken windows and vandalism were commonplace. It\u2019s been the same story all across the country. Now a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/oregon-gun-control-measure-qualifies-ballot\/283-4caa2374-de99-47d4-b592-8e82630b8b65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>effort by gun control groups<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0means law-abiding Oregonians could face even more restrictions on their ability to protect themselves and businesses with a firearm, not more freedoms.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Top of the Ticket<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Oregon\u2019s Democratic Gov. Kate Brown was proclaimed a\u00a0\u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/press\/everytown-oregon-moms-demand-action-declare-victory-for-gun-safety-as-gun-sense-champion-kate-brown-wins-re-election-in-governors-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gunsense<\/a><\/strong>\u201d\u00a0candidate by Everytown for Gun Safety and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/press\/everytown-oregon-moms-demand-action-declare-victory-for-gun-safety-as-gun-sense-champion-kate-brown-wins-re-election-in-governors-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by Oregon Moms Demand Action. She signed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2021\/06\/01\/oregon-bans-guns-from-capitol-demands-safe-storage-in-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>more gun control laws<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0last year but is term-limited, opening the race. Voters are considering a different direction.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon state Rep. Christine Drazan is the Republican candidate, the minority leader in the state house and her belief in the Second Amendment is quite the opposite from Gov. She\u2019s bucked her Democratic colleagues to vote against universal background checks for private firearm transfers and \u201cred flag\u201d laws that didn\u2019t include Due Process rights protections. Drazan has a pro-Second Amendment\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesmanjournal.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2022\/08\/31\/oregon-governor-tina-kotek-christine-drazan-betsy-johnson-gun-rights\/65463205007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0She\u2019s a gunowner and voted\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesmanjournal.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2022\/08\/31\/oregon-governor-tina-kotek-christine-drazan-betsy-johnson-gun-rights\/65463205007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0a flawed mandatory firearm storage proposal in 2021 that also made it a crime for lawful conceal carry permit holders to possess their firearm in the state capitol or on certain sensitive locations. In 2019, Rep. Minority Leader Drazan <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-oregon-campaigns-f6a39797a3cd6c52c25c0dd76e485b31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cWhat happened in Bend was an absolute tragedy. Someone facing extreme mental health challenges was intent on hurting others and was effectively able to do so\u2026but more gun laws will not prevent every single tragedy from happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean for Rep. Drazan heading to Election Day? Voters have currently made her the frontrunner in the race, according to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3674237-republican-narrowly-leads-oregon-governors-race-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polling<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gun Control Ballot Measure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Voters will also decide whether to approve a gun control ballot initiative,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/oregon-gun-control-measure-qualifies-ballot\/283-4caa2374-de99-47d4-b592-8e82630b8b65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IP 17<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0If enacted, the measure would require law-abiding Oregonians to first receive a permit-to-purchase a firearm. Those requirements include paying additional fees, completing an expanded background check, classroom training and more and the permit would be valid for five years. The ballot initiative also would implement restrictions on magazine capacity to 10 rounds or fewer.<\/p>\n<p>NSSF is a member of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sportsmenno114.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coalition<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to vote down this proposal.<\/p>\n<p>As crime remains one of the top issues on voters\u2019 minds heading to Nov. 8, generic Republican candidates hold a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/crime-trumps-abortion-voter-concerns-giving-gop-largest-lead-issue-more-than-30-years-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>14-point advantage<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0over generic Democrats.
