It has also changed the type of work that government defenders \u2013 and the outside gun safety groups that often support them in litigation \u2013 must do to advocate for their laws.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_23ED6ED3-A1C8-F6BF-A07E-89963AD1E82B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>\u201cImagine if you are a district attorney, somewhere in some random state, you suddenly get a lawsuit brought on this, on some gun law you\u2019ve got, and then you\u2019ve got maybe 30 days to respond to the lawsuit. What are you going to do?\u201d said Carlton Larson, a professor at UC-Davis School of Law who specializes in the historical basis of Second Amendment rights.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_14570637-F2AF-E3DD-8A5E-AE829723356F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>\u201cI am a legal historian by training,\u201d Larson said. \u201cI would find it very, very hard to turn around quickly on that and come up with something thoughtful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_541ABC42-FA9D-2B8A-911A-89963AD8B789@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>But gun rights advocates say this work of historical analysis is a better fit for courts than the means-ends balancing test that many lower courts were applying pre-Bruen.
