We\u2019re not interested in trumpeting it to the world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Over the years<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> spent countless hours and days in classes <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">designed to educate law-abiding <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">gun owners<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> on how to <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">properly and safely <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">exercise <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">our<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">constitutional right to bear arms and to carry according to state laws and regulations. In these classes<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> we <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">are<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> educated on what might happen during a<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> fatal <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">defensive <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">encounter<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">and how to best respond. Of course, we spen<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">d<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> a considerable amount of time practicing the shooting process<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">, including<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">how to <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">identify<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> and engage threats properly and accurately<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> which is the cornerstone to successfully end<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">ing<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> a life-threatening encounter without <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">injuring<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> innocent bystanders. <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">These classes are a critical part of a defensive-minded gun <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">owner\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> education.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">There\u2019s<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> no polite way to say it<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> but i<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">f <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">you\u2019re<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> going to carry<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> you need to train and practice. By train<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> I <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> mean <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">taking <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">occasional trips to the local range to punch holes in paper targets<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">T<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">hat\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> more like practice. By train I mean attending an accredited shooting<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> or <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">defensive class from reputable instructors<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> and then practicing what you learn<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">Although this is not a requirement in most states, you should consider requiring it of yourself if you are serious about the <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">role you have accepted as an individual carrying a firearm.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"paragraph\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I Only Need One<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Years ago, I worked closely with an individual who took a serious interest in firearms, particularly pistols. We would go to the range and shoot. While I did my best to introduce him to techniques that might be useful to him as a licensed carrier, he was not interested in learning. He felt simply plinking at targets was sufficient. His response when I would press him on the issue was, \u201cI only need one bullet,\u201d as he would slowly take aim while closing one eye.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">I\u2019m <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">certainly <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">not implying that you need to be a tactician<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> but if someone chooses to make you a victim of a violent crime, time will not be on your side<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">Criminal attacks often occur quickly and unexpectedly<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">. Slow, calm <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">aiming<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> and manipulation<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> of the trigger<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> will <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">likely not<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> be<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">possible. <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">It\u2019s imperative that you <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">are<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> able to respond decisively and quickly with <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">force <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">that is focused and appropriate, <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">within legal parameters<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">and executed with confidence and competence.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> The only way this <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">can<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> happen is with knowledge garnered from proper <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">instruction<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> and repetition<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> of the skills learned during that instruction<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The best way to build and <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">maintain<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> your skillset is to attend training classes. They are available all over the nation<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> and many have multiple levels <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">starting at <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">level <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">one<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> where the instruction is basic and focuses <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">on<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> individuals who are new to carrying or shooting<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">. During a discussion with<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">Hayes,<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">he revealed this is a matter that is creeping up as of late.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u201cThere is a general trend in <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">l<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">aw <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">e<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">nforcement cases that when a police officer is involved in an incident, their training history is examined <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">and <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">can<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> be<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> compared to what they\u2019ve done<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> he <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">said<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> He then mentioned it is starting to trickle into civilian cases<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">he\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> seen as well,<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">stating<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">W<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">e are at the very beginning of this trend.\u201d He also mentioned that juries respond more favorably to the terms <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">\u201c<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">licensed gun owner<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">licensed carrier.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">\u201d<\/span> <span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">That\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">emantics<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> but<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> words count in court<\/span><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"> and a potential benefit to having a concealed carry license even it states that allow permitless carry.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Carrying a firearm for protection is one<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> of<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> the most serious responsibilities you can take. Proper and frequent training<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">, with an eye toward <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">what\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> legal and <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">what <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">isn\u2019t<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> can relieve some of the psychological stress that comes with such a responsibility and provide you with the confidence you need to <\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\">identify<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body\"> situations and handle them appropriately.
