But the same scout might very well be trespassing if she walked around to the back of your house.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The law of implied invitations has evolved over time.\u00a0For example, over the course of the 19th century, most states\u00a0reversed the default rule\u00a0as to whether domesticated cattle were permitted to graze on another owner\u2019s land, thereafter placing the burden on the visiting rancher to obtain that owner\u2019s express consent.\u00a0More recently, some cities have\u00a0flipped the default\u00a0and now prohibit peddlers from solicitation on private property without the owner\u2019s consent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The evolution of implied invitations to enter private property has also applied to gun use.\u00a0Traditionally, armed strangers were permitted to enter onto unimproved rural land to hunt \u2014 unless the owner posted \u201cNo Trespassing\u201d signs along the land\u2019s perimeter.\u00a0But now half the states have flipped the presumption\u00a0so that it is\u00a0trespassing to hunt on private property without the owner\u2019s consent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The law of implied invitations evolves because social norms change over time. Customers generally understand that, by default, they are not allowed to bring their (non-service) animals into a hotel room or a restaurant. They must look for \u201cpet-friendly\u201d or \u201cpets allowed\u201d establishments.
