That\u2019s a question that\u2019s been asked more times than I can count during my professional training career and more often in recent years. The answer is, well\u2026complicated.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Stopping Power<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>First we need to look at one of the most important aspects of carrying a handgun for self-defense, the ability to stop a threat. Statistics will show that a handgun round is a relatively poor choice for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/stopping-power-is-a-myth-mostly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stopping an attacker<\/a>. If I told you that we were going to get into a gunfight at a particular time and place, we would probably both choose rifles. Notice I said <em>hits<\/em>, not shots. Odds are, no matter how good you <em>think<\/em> you are, you\u2019re going to miss somewhere between 50% and 100% of the shots you take in a stressful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/who-can-you-trust-after-a-defensive-gun-use-your-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defensive gun use<\/a>\u00a0situation.<\/p>\n<p>So now let\u2019s do some math. If it takes three to four hits and I miss half my shots, that means I\u2019ll have to shoot six to eight times just to stop one threat.<\/p>\n<p>What if I\u2019m facing more than one threat? You can see how ammunition capacity becomes a very important part of \u201cstopping power\u201d when making the choice on what handgun to buy and carry.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Caliber<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This particular point has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/caliber-wars-cop-weighs-in-on-departments-9mm-vs-40-duty-gun-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">argued<\/a> over for decades and those arguments are going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/rappers-9mm-v-45acp-debate-9mm-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continue<\/a> for decades more. It still takes about the same number of hits to stop a threat regardless of the calibers mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I\u2019m choosing the firearm that I can carry that has the most capacity. I suggest you do the same.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. External Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Plenty of folks are still hung up on external safeties. They\u2019re not confident enough in their skills to carry without one. Just be sure to train properly \u2014 and often \u2014 when using it. During my classes, with inexperienced students, I\u2019ve seen far too many forget to take the safety off and put the safety on. When they try to draw and fire under the minimal stress of the training environment, they get silence, then look at the gun and realize it\u2019s because their handgun\u2019s safety is still engaged.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying that external safeties are a bad thing. But y need to be able to use it <em>without thinking,<\/em> automatically, and all of the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/the-four-rules-of-gun-safety-for-beginners-and-everyone-else\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">firearm safety<\/a> discipline still needs to be observed. You can\u2019t use an external safety like a crutch.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. The Right Fit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How are you going to carry your gun? Inside the waistband? Outside the waistband? In a purse or backpack? You have to be able to quickly deploy your firearm when you need it so being familiar and comfortable with your carry method is critical.<\/p>\n<p>How does the gun fit your hand? That has to factor heavily into your choice, too. A handgun is a life-saving defensive tool. It needs to be safe and reliable and you need to be able to use it effectively. Low cost shouldn\u2019t be the driving factor.
