(AP Photo\/Rick Bowmer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-next-post-navi\">\n<p>\nNext Post Coming Soon&#8230;\u25b6\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"author\">By Salam Fatohi<\/p>\n<p>Recently,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2022\/08\/30\/gun-buybacks-are-popular-but-are-they-effective\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Charitable Trusts<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0explored gun buyback programs and their ability to reduce crime. A \u201cgun buyback program,\u201d or GBP, is a local government program that purchases unwanted firearms. The premise that the government is purchasing \u201cback\u201d privately-owned firearms is nonsense because the government never owned them in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Firearm manufacturers and importers are the point of origin for the vast majority of firearms in the United States. The U.S. government doesn\u2019t manufacture firearms and buying them back is simply <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/the-gun-buyback-pr-sham-criminals-are-the-least-likely-to-be-turning-guns-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feel-good marketing<\/a><\/strong>. Suggesting otherwise is intellectually dishonest.<\/p>\n<p>This clever promotional scheme is made more problematic since the programs use taxpayer dollars to fund such initiatives. When considering the fact that GBPs began in the 1970s, the fiscal impact to tax-paying citizens over the decades is material.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sounds Good, But\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At first glance, buying guns so they don\u2019t end up on the street and used in the commission of a crime seems like a noble cause. However, the problem with this exercise is that the firearms purchased are largely from low-crime cities, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w28763#:~:text=Using%20data%20from%20the%20National,the%20year%20following%20a%20buyback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Bureau of Economic Research<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(NBER) study.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_531928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-531928\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img evidence that U.S. GBPs have been ineffective at deterring gun crime, firearm-related homicides, or firearm-related suicides in the short- or long-run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even more troubling, the same research also found a small increase in gun-related crime after a gun buyback due to the perception that there will be less law-abiding citizens with firearms to defend themselves.<\/p>\n<figure (AP Photo\/Rick Bowmer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The data is clear that GBPs don\u2019t prevent or reduce firearm-related crime, homicides or suicides and may, in fact, increase crime temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>GBPs are a gross misuse of taxpayer dollars when unwanted firearms can be voluntarily surrendered at any time and at no cost to police. Furthermore, the firearms bought back through a GBP are not those typically used in crime and about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojp.gov\/ncjrs\/virtual-library\/abstracts\/characteristics-gun-exchange-program-and-assessment-potential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>25 percent<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0are not in working order.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Don\u2019t Double Down<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pew Research also reports suggestions have been made to increase GBP financial compensation to incentivize criminals that would otherwise not participate. (AP Photo\/Lynne Sladky)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tax dollar impact aside, some GBP advocates even suggest following the \u201cAustralian model\u201d of GBP, which refers to the late 1990s national gun confiscation conducted by force. This move would destroy the tenets of the Second Amendment for a promise of a reduction in gun crime that will never come to be.<\/p>\n<p>Wasteful government spending may be in vogue now, but doubling down on the compensation for surrendered firearms knowing full well it will not reduce crime or disarm criminals is ridiculous. A better use of those taxpayer funds would be supporting and funding firearm safety courses for firearm owners.
