A binary trigger is just that. It\u2019s a trigger that fires when pressed and also when released. That\u2019s a distinction some people don\u2019t seem to get. It\u2019s not select fire and it certainly isn\u2019t a forced reset trigger. Okay?<\/p>\n<p>With that said, Franklin Armory has been making binary triggers for more than five years now. Back in 2018 they announced their BFS III triggers for AR and then AK, CZ Scorpions and other rifles. And then they designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gear-review-franklin-armory-bsfiii-22-c1-binary-trigger-for-10-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one for 10\/22 rifles<\/a>. Because why not?<\/p>\n<p>The latest iteration of binary fun is a trigger for handguns. That\u2019s a little more involved undertaking than it is for rifles where drop-in triggers make conversion a lot easier. In a pistol, you\u2019re also talking about modifications to the slide. That\u2019s no doubt why it\u2019s taken Franklin Armory about 18 months to bring their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/franklin-armorys-g-s173-binary-trigger-and-slide-for-glock-17-gen3-pistols-is-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G-S173 Binary Trigger<\/a> and Slide for GLOCK 17 Gen3 pistols to market.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, the final product has been worth the wait. We first saw and shot Franklin Armory\u2019s prototype for the G-S173 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/range-day-franklin-armory-binary-glock-trigger-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at SHOT Show 2022<\/a>. You\u2019ll need to use your own barrel and recoil spring. If you\u2019re not comfortable swapping out the stock trigger with the G-S173 trigger, take it to a local gunsmith. It takes about five minutes to change them out. Then just put your barrel and recoil spring in the Franklin Armory slide and you\u2019re good to go.<\/p>\n<p>The G-S172 isn\u2019t an inexpensive proposition. The MSRP is $899. You can buy a new standard semi-automatic Gen3 G17 for about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;merchant_id=7486894c-de29-4e50-8d4e-87ffc84a0095&amp;website_id=4e8a62e5-c9f2-4169-947d-06856fc118da&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.guns.com%2Fsearch%3Fkeyword%3Dglock%2520g17%2520gen%25203%26condition%3Dnew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$525<\/a>. Most of the usual suspect states ban them (California, Hawaii, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware and D.C. as of this writing) but they\u2019re A-OK in the the Franklin slide has forward serrations. After a short pause, I pull the trigger again and, while keeping pressure on the trigger, I turn the switch back to semi-auto and\u2026release the trigger without firing another round. When you\u2019re dry-firing the gun, the pull is kind of sproing-y and it\u2019s clicky on the release. But when you\u2019ve got live ammo in the pistol, things get <em>much<\/em> better. The pull is every bit as good as a standard GLOCK Gen3 (in other words, it\u2019s OK). The release feels like a normal resent\u2026only with a bang after the click.<\/p>\n<p>While they\u2019re a lot of fun to use and shoot, binary triggers aren\u2019t for everyone. You have to be cognizant of the trigger, what it\u2019s designed to do, and how it operates. If you are, you\u2019ll love the G-S173. You split times will definitely be reduced. Release rounds also tend to be more accurate as there\u2019s less effort required than with a five to seven pound trigger pull. It\u2019s a smoother, more natural motion.<\/p>\n<p>As always, practice makes perfect (or darned close). Once you get some trigger time in with the G-S173, you\u2019ll see how much fun it can be. And as always, as long as you\u2019re observing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/the-four-rules-of-gun-safety-for-beginners-and-everyone-else\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Rules of Firearm Safety<\/a>, you\u2019ll be just fine.<\/p>\n<p>Some will consider the G-S173 an expensive range toy. If that includes you, okay then. Lots of people have a lot of expensive range toys. Others will love the option of faster fire capability a binary trigger gives you, especially after a decent amount of range time.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no reason a G-S173-equipped GLOCK can\u2019t be your carry or home defense gun. You\u2019ll certainly want to be sure to bring it with you on every range trip. Franklin Armory\u2019s made good on the promise they made at SHOT in 2022 and the G-S173 is everything it should (and needs) to be.
