Their latest attempt at gaslighting of the American public is pushing the \u201crethinking criminal justice\u201d narrative that says keeping violent criminal predators in prison doesn\u2019t make Americans safer.<\/p>\n<p>Really. CNN cites \u201cexperts\u201d who claim that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/12\/us\/memphis-prison-sentences-violent-crime\/index.html\">keeping violent criminals in prison<\/a> doesn\u2019t stop violent crime.<\/p>\n<p><em><cite class=\"source__cite\"\/>Calls for tougher prison sentences are growing in Memphis, Tennessee, as word spreads the suspects in two violent attacks there this month had been released from prison before serving their full sentences for prior convictions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_CA3421CF-43DA-0AD1-9F92-28EC44F559A5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>But experts told CNN research shows harsher penalties are not an effective deterrent to violent crime.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ah, but harsher penalties tend to keep bad guys locked up longer in places where they can\u2019t victimize more innocents people\u2026thus preventing more crime. Especially the violent kinds.<\/p>\n<p>The family and friends of 34-year-old teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/06\/police-confirm-body-found-in-memphis-is-eliza-fletcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliza Fletcher<\/a> in Memphis might disagree<\/p>\n<p>So too the friends and family members of the hundreds of Chicago residents \u2014 their names we\u2019ll never know because they weren\u2019t billionaire heiresses or other celebrities \u2014 who were shot and\/or killed by recidivists and accused felons out on so-called \u201caffordable bail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cwbchicago.com\/2022\/09\/36-driver-exchanged-shots-with-gunman-in-another-car-while-on-felony-bail-prosecutors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CWB Chicago<\/a> follows the stories of these victims of the previously-arrested, who were then released under Illinois misguided \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/publicacts\/fulltext.asp?Name=100-0001\">Affordable Bail Act of 2017<\/a>\u201d . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>This report continues our coverage of individuals accused of killing, shooting, or trying to kill or shoot others while on bond for a pending felony case. Scores more were shot and survived. One case involved a homeless guy who was doused in gasoline then set ablaze.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/cwbchicago.com\/2022\/05\/walking-man-suspect-awol-burglary-chicago.html\">CWB Chicago<\/a> back on May 30th . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Joseph Guardia, the man who police say set a well-known homeless man on fire in River North last week, has been wanted by authorities since February 2021 when he stopped showing up in court for two felony burglary cases in the suburbs, court records show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Guardia is the 22nd person accused of killing or shooting \u2014 or trying to shoot or kill \u2014 someone in Chicago this year while awaiting trial for a felony. The alleged crimes involve at least 50 victims, 11 of whom died.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Joseph Kromelis, 75, was on fire for about three minutes before security guards extinguished the flames, Assistant State\u2019s Attorney Danny Hanichak said. Hanichak, a prosecutor for 16 years, told Judge Charles Beach he had never seen video footage as horrific as the attack on Kromelis. Doctors believe Kromelis\u2019 injuries are not survivable, he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then there was the guy out on \u201caffordable bail\u201d who police caught for a second time engaging in rolling gun battles through the city. A bigger question: Why wasn\u2019t he still in prison for the first conviction?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Prosecutors say a man who was convicted of exchanging shots in a rolling gunbattle in 2019 was once again engaged in a shootout while traveling in a car in Chicago this week. Naheem King, 22, was himself shot during the incident while having a hand bandaged from a previous gunshot wound and while on bail for a felony, officials said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or this guy who, exactly one week after being released on \u201caffordable bail\u201d on a felony gun charge, executed another gang member according to prosecutors. From <a href=\"https:\/\/cwbchicago.com\/2022\/09\/35-one-week-after-being-released-on-felony-gun-charge-man-shot-and-killed-rival-gang-member-in-random-attack-prosecutors-say.html\">CWB Chicago<\/a> . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Two men who shot an opposing gang member in a random attack on Monday evening were arrested before they could even flee the scene because Chicago cops were tipped off to the shooting by the city\u2019s ShotSpotter gunfire detection network, officials said. And a concealed-carry holder who was near the victim allegedly returned fire, injuring a passenger in their car.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>One of the accused men, Julius Hernandez, was released from custody to await trial for a pending felony gun charge in juvenile court exactly one week before the murder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or this guy who killed his sister\u2019s boyfriend after being released on on charges of <a href=\"https:\/\/cwbchicago.com\/2022\/09\/33-chicago-man-killed-half-sisters-boyfriend-while-on-electronic-monitoring-shooting-someone-prosecutors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting someone else<\/a> . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Prosecutors say a Chicago man on electronic monitoring for allegedly shooting a woman in 2020 got another gun and killed his half-sister\u2019s boyfriend in their home Saturday night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Kevin Bennett is the 33rd person accused of killing or shooting\u2014or attempting to kill or shoot\u2014someone in Chicago while awaiting trial for a felony this year.
